Mutilated lion sculpture; h. 37 ×  w. 46 ×  d. 22.5 cm.
Text
Middle Indo-Aryan, Southern Brāhmī script. Engraved on the right side of the lion; h. unavailable ×  w. 29 cm . Vogel has made the following observations : (...) it is curious that [this] inscription, consisting of a single line of writing, has been done in such a careless manner. Apparently this short epigraph was not intended for permanent record, but was meant only as a notice, indicating for what edifice the piece of sculpture on which it is cut was intended ( Vogel 1947-48: 2 ).
Date
Datable to the Ikṣvāku period by palaeography, its script has been compared to that of the Jaggayapeta inscriptions by Vogel 1947-48 .
Origin
Ghantasala.
Provenance
Discovered no later than 1945, its findspot unknown. Identified at Ghantasala Museum (w/out acc. no.) in February 2016.
